Celebrating Women in Aviation: Ella Federico, Assistant Management Accountant at Magma Aviation

05 Mar 2021

To celebrate International Women’s Day at Magma Aviation we are shining a spotlight on women in aviation. Our Celebrating Women in Aviation series holds space for the experiences of our wonderful colleagues, giving you an insight into how they got to where they are today and their advice for other women and girls considering a career in the aviation industry.

Ella Federico is relatively new to the industry, currently working in her first aviation role that she started at Magma five and a half months ago. She began her accounting career in a different kind of travel sector. Her personal interest in flying to new places and exploring different countries and cultures drew Ella to the aviation industry.

She is responsible for many business-critical tasks,

“I assist with preparing the costings for our weekly meeting and ensuring that they are as accurate as they can be. I examine any costings queries and I regularly update my month-end files ready for when we start management accounts so that I can meet the tight deadlines that we have before submission”.

Ella particularly enjoys building reports that assist senior staff with making decisions and improving processes, which in turn enable the team to get through their workload more efficiently.

Studies show that the vast majority of aviation positions are filled by men, which is something that Ella is not surprised by. She explains,

“I think that a lot of women believe there are certain roles that they wouldn’t be given a chance to do, as they are typically filled by men. It may be a confidence issue as they will then think they are less likely to be considered for them”.

She continued,

“I think we can balance this by advertising to show that women do work within this industry – have women as the focus. If it is clearly advertised that women can do this job too it might inspire young girls to start their careers in this industry, and possibly for older women to retrain into this industry”.

Ella loves the variety of the aviation industry, and enjoys that no two days are the same and that she is constantly learning new things within her role and about the wider industry.

She champions girls and women being brave and having confidence in their own abilities;

“If aviation is something you are passionate about then take whatever steps you need to get into the industry. Yes, it is predominately male-based within certain roles, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Never doubt your own abilities – with hard work and determination you can achieve anything. Feel the fear and do it anyway!”
